My deepest condolences go out to you, Susan, Stephen, Emily, Robert, Melanie, and all of the Sturm Family. Don was a great man and in my time as Stephen’s nanny when he was just a little guy, I learned many things from him. He was so very wise and generous, and taught me to have more pride in who I am. He left an indelible mark on this world.

I could go on and on about what an amazing person Don was, every story and memory leads to 10 more at the blink of an eye. The entire Sturm family has been a wonderful part of my life and I immensely cherish them and the impact they have on others. Nelson Henderson said, "The true meaning of life is to plant trees, under whose shade you do not expect to sit". I did not expect to be lucky enough to sit under Don's shade for so many years, and I hope he knew how many people that even just briefly sat under his shade, were deeply touched by his good will and charisma. I am forever grateful for everything he taught me. His smile and sense of humor always brightened up any space he entered; the office is a bit darker without him here. Don's story truly is a good one, and I am so blessed to have been a part of it.

We send our love and condolences to the Strum family. While we have not met Don, we had the honor and privilege of hosting him and his family in our home in Corona Del Mar over the last nine months. We couldn't have dreamed of better guests and we welcome his family to stop by if in town. What a legacy Don leaves and the world is a better place because of him!

Sending love and comfort to the Sturm family. Both my husband and I were graduates of the Sturm Fellows and I spent many years chatting with Don before and after High Holy Days at JYW. Don was always kind and thoughtful and did so much for our community.
May his memory be forever a blessing.

I’ve been so fortunate to be neighbors with Don and Sue Sturm for years now - on the 8th floor of The Residences at Fillmore Plaza. Don built these apartments and their stunning home when Sue said she ‘wanted to walk to work’ every day.
I met them both shortly after moving in and was completely taken aback with their friendly, kind unaffected ways.
Don started driving a scooter in the last few years and became a terror ( haha ) on that thing. He loved to drive it backwards down the hall to their front entrance - when he exited the elevator.
Then recently Sue got him one that was a bit more powerful and stylish looking. ( more speed !!! ).
As Sue will attest to: Don hated the cold weather we have here in the winter - and on this particular day I was walking on the sidewalk in below freezing temps in front of the FedEx building next to the ANB Bank - and all of a sudden I see Don coming towards me in his new scooter…….now this is a man who would ALWAYS stop and say hello - and we’d chat for a moment or two - but on this day - as I watched him advancing towards me - I realized he was a full speed and was NOT stopping - so I jumped out of his way - and as he sped past and I heard him say ‘ TOO COLD CAN’T STOP’ ……it was so funny. LOL.
His immense presence, his charm, his inspiring ways - his kindness towards everyone - will be profoundly missed. My deepest condolences to Sue, Stephen, and Emily. An extraordinary family. Rachel Dee

Don and Susan were early donors to IAALS, the Institute for the Advancement of the American Legal System at DU, and I am forever grateful for their unique blend of hope and aspiration for great outcomes coupled with practical, attentive monitoring. Their guidance and support made IAALS better and me better as well.

I knew Don for over 30 years through my role at the University of Denver. Don was on the Board of Trustees and served as chair of its Finance & Budget Committee for many years. He was also on the Buildings & Grounds Committee. Don made staff like me our best because we tried to anticipate the trustees' questions and (hopefully) had the correct answers. Don and Susan were always nice to me. He will be missed but not forgotten.

Sitting here thinking about Don, a titan who rose from enormous adversity to find power in creating family, relationships, and meaningful work. Don was a huge presence to all who knew him and also a loving patriarch who learned to shift with the times while holding on to his elemental beliefs and values.
Howard and I feel so fortunate to have been included in the (almost) family circle on so many joyous events over decades, including us in travel, exploration, laughter (remember the scorpion king in Costa Rica), many Thanksgivings in Beaver Creak, creative Passover Seders, raising all our kids in parallel as they also took us on a variety of journeys of the heart and soul. Also Bar Mitzvahs, weddings, mountain hut joys, continued learning together in Bandolier and at the Henry Ford Museum, the list goes on.
Please accept our deepest love and condolences on Don’s passing.
